In case you didn’t know, I left Dell back in February. I’m extremely fortunate in that I was able to take some time to think about what I wanted my next role to look like. I decided I didn’t want to go independent yet, but that’s still on the long-term plan horizon.
This was my wishlist:
- Expectation to stay technical.
- Work with new technology
- Attached to the product team in some way. Being in product is my happy place.
- Visible, externally and internally. This is harder than it seems in a big company.
- Work with experienced marketers want to blend social tools into the the marketing mix to build relationships. I came to marketing via tech and technical training development, so I want work with experienced marketers to keep building this skill.
- Stay in Austin. This was harder than I thought it would be.
I interviewed with a lot of great companies, and a few fit most of the items on my checklist. I was close to accepting one offer, but I would have had to move to the other side of the country. Then, out of the blue, an opportunity showed up that fit the entire list.
On Monday, I’ll be starting as a Product Marketing Manager for Spanning. They are a startup in Austin that was acquired by EMC last fall (they are actually a wholly owned subsidiary of EMC). So yes, I’ll be back as a badged EMC employee. They do pure SaaS backup for Microsoft Office 365, Salesforce, and Google apps. I’ll be working mostly on the solution for Office 365, and I’ll be at the Microsoft Partner Conference next month.
