About
So, what about me?
I was born on Turner AFB in Albany, GA. (Turner is now a Miller Beer Brewery….not sure what to make of that). I grew up in Fort Walton Beach, FL. I got married when I was 19 (don’t ask me why), and moved to Bermuda. I had two children almost right away. Then I got divorced.
I decided to go to college after I had been divorced a few years. Someone told me I could get money to go to school, and sure enough I could. I got an AS in Electronic Engineering Technology at the local community college. Then I transferred to Florida State (dragging the kids along), and got a degree in Information Studies (they have since changed the degree’s name to Information Science).
I received a fantastic eductation at FSU. Lots of challenges….like helping an elementary school decide on how to make their school’s information available to parents electonically. And also helping to start a union for Native American Students.
Then I moved to Massachusetts to work for a big storage company. The move brought the kids closer to their dad. I also met my SO at that job. But when they laid me off just shy of one year, I started probing to find out why so many high-tech professional were out of work, especially if news reports kept talking about labor shortages in that sector. And Displaced Techies was born.
My daughter was also diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome, something I firmly believe would have gone undiagnosed had we stayed in the South. That diagnosis has changed the whole family, we are still trying to make sense of it all. My real passion is to be involved with helping adults with Asperger’s, especially helping companies understand Aspies (that is part of what I want to learn at grad school).
My son has had his ups and downs as well, but he seems to have used music and theatre to keep himself on course. I embarrass him by putting his performances on youtube. Although, if he doesn’t stop complaining I think I will convert some of his baby videos and post those as well! He is the reason I am on MySpace. Actually, if you have a kid on MySpace, you are crazy not to be on there as well.
What else can I tell you…I love to cook. I have learned how to can. I think it is important to buy local, so we put up all the veggies we need in the winter in the summer…we buy them from a local farm. I have been working on researching my ancestors, that is not as easy.
Some things I am working on are: work, grad school, putting up food for the winter, helping my daughter move back to college, helping my son move into college, helping my bf around the house.
And, I am a geek.
