I came across this article about a new virtual world researches at the University of Texas have created to provide a place for people with Asperger’s to practice social skills in the Virtual Worlds Forum Blog. It was also covered by VNN (Virtual Worlds News).

They are being used to manage behavior, not to discourage violent behavior. From today’s Tallahassee Democrat:
“the child was fined a point for impolite behavior because she didn’t answer the teacher’s roll call by saying, “Here.” The teacher asked several times. Katine said the child’s mother said the child didn’t like going from a small classroom to the larger classroom for a different class.”
So, what if the 7-year old is autistic? And was sensoried-out, or was thinking about something else, and didn’t hear her name being called?
Those people have to realize working with this population takes more effort than the NT populace, right??
