what I cooked this weekend

Monday, July 30th, 2007

So I have a TON of sage drying…I need to hang it up in the basement.

I made fried corn today, but the ears were smaller than usual so I only got enough for dinner and about a pint.

I have some beets I am going to pickle.

We are going to pick blackberries in a couple of weeks at the winery. I got some from the farm but I think they are wild…they are bigger and sweeter at the winery.

We cooked up one of the eggplants (off one of our plants) for Baba Ganoush. I also charred corn for salsa and grilled another eggplant, some zucchini and squash for sandwiches this week. Ok I made Brian grill it, same difference. :)

So, I shouldn’t have to cook till Wed. Nice.

Illegal Immigrants leaving because of the exchange rate

Sunday, July 29th, 2007

The tone of this article is just SO wrong. Of all the comments, this one bugged me the most:

An illegal immigrant who owns a roofing company in Framingam “still makes much more money here than in Brazil, but the falling exchange rate is making him think whether his sacrifice is worth all the trouble he experiences by living in the shadows. Once, he was arrested by the police and sent to court for driving without a license, and recently his car insurance company told him it won’t renew his insurance unless he obtains a driver’s license. Insurance companies accept international driver’s licenses only the first year, said the man, and after that, he had to use three different false names to secure insurance for his car.”

That just ain’t right.

it’s all about the workers

Saturday, July 28th, 2007

First Kuwaiti, the company that built the US Embassy in Iraq, built it using slave labor.

It’s alleged that “foreign employees were taken into Iraq under false pretenses and then could not leave because the company had taken their passports.” Oh yeah, and workers were told they were going to Dubai, not Baghdad, so they had no idea where they were going till they got there. Second link is a youtube video of the Oversight Committee hearing “Allegations of Waste, Fraud, and Abuse at the New U.S. Embassy in Iraq.”
The contractor got $600 Million and used kidnapped men to do the work. The government is pointing fingers at who to blame, so someone is making a pretty penny on this mess.

The state of Sequoyah

Saturday, July 28th, 2007

Change is coming

Monday, July 23rd, 2007

Maybe that is why I feel so ill-at-ease. Nothing I write comes out right….nothing I say sounds right to me either. Big changes next month, and I don’t know if I’ll do well with that.

Kenny is off to conquer to world, I think Bri is at that same stage…just sent off both tuition checks today. My god I have never, ever in my life been without a child to look after. What am I going to do?

Well I am starting grad school next month…that is a big change too. I feel happy and scared and overwhelmed all at once. I wish I could go down to my water…maybe going here would help some. I keep trying to remember this is part of a normal cycle…trying not to fight what is supposed to happen (even though it feels so damn unnatural!)

Hoping to get to Niceville for the Mullet Festival. Go down to the water…can still swim that time of year.

I just miss home. I don’t think I wanted to be so far away from home when this time came. I just want to be around my friends, who would all tell me how full of crap I am.

I hope this all passes soon.

A tree crashed our fence

Monday, July 23rd, 2007

We have a tree for a backyard now. And it isn’t our tree. Hopefully the insurance works it all out.

I think it took down a  squirrel’s nest. Pictures soon.

Are these cicada wasps

Saturday, July 21st, 2007

Take a look at this video. It is of a wasp like insect that was guarding one of the holes on our steps (I can’t wait till they get redone!). We think it’s a cicada killer.
Brianna what do you think?

Also…since I am blogging….I made 9 half-pints plus one pint of chow chow (you put it on hot dogs and pinto beans. mmm mmm mmm!!!), and one quart of cauliflower went in the freezer. Yay. I also started moving plants before the construction starts on our steps.

Unsafe, overcrowded houses shut down

Saturday, July 21st, 2007

Scary what people do to rent out rooms in their houses.
